About This Movement
We are a broad coalition of North Carolinians calling for justice, fairness and second chances for people incarcerated in our state prisons, especially Black people and other people of color. On December 1, 2020, partners began a content-heavy social media campaign to highlight and address mass incarceration and state prison safety during the new-at-the-time COVID-19 pandemic and provide a public, high-profile platform to uplift the needs, voices and calls for help of mostly Black North Carolinians in prison.
The campaign is in its third year, and is partially focused on a small, regularly-rotating group of people and organizations standing vigil at the Governor’s mansion, since our primary demand is that Gov. Roy Cooper use his clemency power and all other means to decarcerate immediately. The vigil serves as a forum for compelling narrative- and personality-driven content, including the real-time commentary of mostly directly-impacted participants. Through our use of several social media platforms – especially Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter – the vigil will anchor and introduce a deep and broad range of people and concepts to a statewide audience using pre-recorded and streaming virtual content generated by coalition partners and racial justice advocates around the state.
